JAY RYAN
Screened In: Curiosities, Rarities and B-sides
January 21 - February 19, 2011
Opening Reception: January 21, 5-8pm
Walnut Ink Gallery is excited to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of works by Jay Ryan, Screened In: Curiosities, Rarities and B-sides. The show opens with an artist reception Friday, January 21 and runs through February 19, 2011.  Ryan is a leading Chicago-land printmaker, poster artist, musician and owner of The Bird Machine. He is largely known for his concert and event posters. His work is easily recognized by his distinctive color palate, hand-drawn fonts and blithe creatures performing acrobatic feats executed in perfect harmony. A closer examination reveals the thought provoking, intimate curiosities Ryan finds within the human condition. There is a beautiful imperfectness to Ryan's work which reflects simplicity, innate personal vision and above all a love of printmaking.

The mainstream is no place for Jay Ryan, who relies on pencil and knife rather than stylus and computer. Ryan's silkscreen’s have achieved a cult following in the print collecting and independent music scenes and remain sought after by collectors around the world. Ryan has created gig posters for Hum, Wilco, Andrew Bird, Sterolab, Shellac, Neko Case and many more. His wonderfully strange, hand drawn details invite you in, keep you engaged and wanting more.

The Chicago-land artist is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (School of Art + Design: painting). Ryan owns and operates The Bird Machine, located in Skokie, IL. His works have been published in, 100 Posters, 134 Squirrels: A Decade of Hot Dogs, Large Mammals, and Independent Rock: The Handcrafted Art of Jay Ryan. His most recent publication, Animals and Objects in and Out of Water is a collection of 100 of his favorite posters along with an intro by Andrew Bird and an essay by Joe Meno. Both are available in limited quantity at Walnut Ink Gallery.
